Jul 30, 2008 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The significant economic benefits available to Australia through the early adoption of a carbon trading scheme have been overlooked in recent debate. Despite the high level of attention given to those industries likely to be adversely affected by the changes, emissions trading will lead to the creation of new financial markets and private-sector trading platforms, which could provide an opportunity for Australia to dominate emerging Asian carbon markets. Australian financial institutions have particular expertise in the area of sophisticated market operation and should seize the opportunity in 2008 to play a leading role in the region.
