STCRCThis report provides a complete summary of the scoping study report which has been undertaken by STCRC. The goal of the project was to build a framework to inform and prioritise adaptation strategies which can be undertaken by destinations and tourism businesses. To do this, the climate change vulnerability of each destination was assessed, with a focus on the potential impacts on tourism infrastructure, activities and operational costs. Summary chapters highlighting key research, findings and recommendations for each of the case study regions are included in this document. The full technical report can be downloaded here.

ETS will add to thousands of jobs already lost - Miners
19/03/2009 - Over 10,000 Australian mining jobs have been lost in the last three months, and more will be cut under the federal government's emissions trading scheme (ETS), an industry leader says.
Ian Smith, Chairman of the Minerals Council of Australia and chief executive of Australia's biggest gold company Newcrest Mining Ltd, said on Wednesday the global economic crisis had severely impacted Australia's mining sector.
The number of people directly employed in the industry doubled to 142,000 from 2004 during the resources boom, but 10,500 mining jobs have gone since November last year, he said.

Growing calls for emissions trading to be put off till '12
27/02/2009 - Plans to start emissions trading next year are in trouble after a powerful business group withdrew its support.
The Australian Industry Group (Ai Group) has called for the scheme to be delayed until 2012 because of the economic crisis.
This caps off a horror stretch for the federal government's scheme.
Industry groups, farmers and green groups are all ramping up their opposition to the scheme.
In parliament, the opposition and the Greens have sharpened their criticism of the scheme, raising the possibility it won't get through the Senate.

Emissions delay not economically responsible-minister

Giving up on climate change?
The Rudd proposals on climate change will fail to achieve a meaningful reduction in carbon emissions.
Scientists warn that unless greenhouse gas emissions are significantly and rapidly reduced by 2020, by at least 25 per cent below 1990 levels, global warming and climate change will become irreversible and uncontrollable. As a consequence, large areas of the planet may be unable to sustain their present population or become uninhabitable. Massive population movements will be caused by an increasingly severe climate producing flooding, draughts and crop failures, compounded by hunger and disease on a massive scale.
We know from recent experience that failure of a single sector of the economy - US home loans - can lead to recession from which no country is immune. Recession gives rise to business failures, unemployment and falling demand which can rapidly wash away accumulated prosperity.
Imagine then the effects on businesses and the economy of repeated and prolonged failures in Australia of agriculture, fisheries and tourism and associated industries. These would include falling exports, contraction of the manufacturing sector, a shrinking economy and all that goes with it. Add to this climate change producing tidal surges and coastal flooding with property losses and our present economic woes will pale into insignificance.

20/11/2008 - Emissions trading will sink about a third of new LNG projects, an industry lobby group warns.
