The Eighteenth United Nations Regional Cartographic conference for Asis and the Pacific (UNRCC-AP)
Bangkok, Thailand, 26-29 October 2009
The theme of the eighteenth conference is "Spatial Enablement and the Response to Climate Change and the Millennium Development Goals". In February 1948, the Economic and Social Council recommended that Governments of Member States stimulate surveying and mapping of their national territories and that the Secretary-General of the United Nations take appropriate action to further such efforts. A Committee of Experts on Cartography was appointed by the Secretary General to study the problem and advise upon the means of its implementation. The first meeting of the committee of experts on cartography was held in 1955.
The current Conference would bring together specialists from Asia and the Pacific and other parts of the world, and provide an opportunity to review and assess how well geographic information can be used in dealing with critical issues such as spatial enablement and responses to climate change. It would also give an opportunity to identify the impediments and barriers that still exist, with a view to suggesting appropriate solutions in order to overcome them.

The seminar, organized by the United Nations Statistics Division and Statistics Norway as the convener of the Oslo Group on Energy Statistics, discussed the need for international recommendations for energy statistics, presented the challenges in developing these recommendations and emphasized the importance of making energy statistics an integral part of official statistics.

This seminar, organized by the European Commission, Eurostat, provided an overview of the recent developments and challenges ahead in environment statistics. The Environment for Europe reform plan
The Environment for Europe reform plan was adopted by the Committee on Environmental
Policy at its Special session on 29 January 2009
The plan includes the objectives and priorities of the Environment for Europe
(EfE) process as well as its general principles. It also calls for particular
measures to be taken related to the preparatory phase of the Conference,
and specifies its format and outcome. New elements of the EfE Conference
are worth mentioning: the CEP would act as the convening body for the preparatory
process; not more than two themes be identified and addressed by the Conference
and; its main outcomes should be focused and action oriented. A last section
on implementation is also included, Â with all relevant responsible actors
to implement the outcomes of the EfE Ministerial Conferences. The Plan would
be transmitted to the Economic Commission for Europe at its

GREENHOUSE 09: new climate change challenges
SNIPPET: According to conference convenor and coordinator for the Australian Climate Change Science Program, CSIRO's Paul Holper, the event will attract some of the world's leading climate scientists, policy makers and government and industry representatives. 'There has been tremendous research progress since the launch of Australia's climate change projections in 2007,' Mr Holper says. It will provide an insight to Distributed energy activities in Asia Pacific from some leading proponents in WADE and also have a VIP visit to CSIRO's Energy Center in Newcastle. . Conference delegates are expected to include energy managers, large private and public energy users, facility managers, policy makers and experts and representatives from utility companies.

Conference on Climate Change and Official Statistics

The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), in collaboration with the Statistical Office of the European Communities (Eurostat), the World Bank and Statistics Norway, convened an international conference on climate change and official statistics.
Climate change is high on the political agenda at all levels. The global official statistics community presently engages the issues of climate change in an ad hoc manner. Some national statistical offices are heavily engaged and provide all official estimates required in the monitoring efforts. Some engage only in analytical efforts, principally to investigate the effects of mitigation protocols on national economy or the impact of climate change in planning scenarios. Many others have no activities at all related to this topic. There is a need to discuss how official statistics can contribute to the measurement and monitoring of the different aspects of climate change and to bring together all current activities into a coherent framework. This conference is therefore designed as a forum for the exploration of ideas and to establish an agenda for future work.
The output of the conference will be an agenda for action by the global official statistics community. The agenda will be submitted to the 40th session of the UN Statistical Commission for discussion and endorsement in 2009.
