An unsustainable future

Policy for reducing carbon dioxide emissions now appears to be double-barrelled with a target for renewable sources for electricity generation with government subsidies and a carbon tax in the form of an emissions trading scheme. Neither approach appears to be realistic, possible or even plausible.

The Federal Government has a target of 20 per cent renewable electricity by 2020. This requires about 6,000MW of additional deliverable power for a projected total energy demand of 260,000GWh in 2020.

It is difficult to imagine any carbon free technology readily deployable and able to provide this except for nuclear power and wind. Since the government will not consider nuclear power, wind power is the technology of choice.

More money is needed for ETS - Energy industry says

3/02/2009 - The federal government needs to put up more money to help the electric power industry make the transition to emissions trading, power generators say.

The federal government plans to provide $4 billion to heavy-emitting industries under its planned carbon pollution reduction scheme, due to begin by July 2010.

But the amount is not enough, a group representing coal, gas, diesel and bio-electricity generators has told a Senate inquiry hearing in Canberra.

The level of assistance must meet industry's expected asset value loss, the National Generators Forum said.

Ocean wave energy technology trial

The Minister for Defence, Joel Fitzgibbon MP, and the Minister for Resources, Energy and Tourism, Martin Ferguson AM MP, welcome the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Carnegie Corporation and the Department of Defence to investigate the feasibility of using wave energy to generate electricity and desalinated water for HMAS Stirling at Garden Island in Western Australia.

Carnegie holds a research licence with the West Australian Department of Planning and Infrastructure to deploy monitoring equipment at a test site west of Garden Island to assess wave energy potential and trial its ocean wave energy technology.

NSW will launch solar feed-in tariff for surplus electricity

25/11/2008 - NSW households generating solar power will be paid for surplus electricity they pump into the grid under a new state government scheme.

The Rees government next year will introduce a feed-in tariff to encourage people to take up solar power, paying for unused electricity householders put into the grid.

How much they will receive is yet to be worked out, but it could be up to 60 cents per kilowatt, or four times the price of conventional electricity, ABC Television has reported.

NSW Environment Minister Carmel Tebbutt said the feed-in tariff would act as an incentive for those wanting to help tackle climate change.

Coal provides the bulk of the nation's electricity, but research released Wednesday points to a massive surge in power from wind and natural gas.

The government's economic research agency - ABARE - has for the first time mapped out all energy projects which are in the pipeline.
