Solar power station for Alice Springs
The Federal Government will fund half of a $6.6 million solar power station to be built in Alice Springs as part of the Australian Government's Alice Solar City project.
Speaking at the 3rd International Solar Energy Society conference in Sydney the Environment Minister Peter Garrett announced $3.3 million in Federal funding for the project.

Massive solar power station on the cards for Canberra
4/09/2008 - The ACT Labor government will move ahead with plans to build a massive solar power station capable of powering 10,000 homes if re-elected next month.
Chief Minister Jon Stanhope says a study commissioned by the government and power company ActewAGL had determined that a solar plant appeared feasible.

Capturing solar energy from asphalt pavements

Massachusetts researchers have found a new method for capturing solar energy. They're using heat from asphalt and other paved surfaces to produce electricity. Through asphalt, 'the researchers are developing a solar collector that could turn roads and parking lots into ubiquitous -- and inexpensive -- sources of electricity and hot water.' This is an excellent idea because parking lots stay hot at night -- at least during summer -- and 'could continue to generate energy after the sun goes down, unlike traditional solar-electric cells.' Furthermore, there is no need to find land to build solar farms. Finally, there would be another advantage. Unlike rooftop solar panels, solar collectors in roads and parking lots would be invisible.
