Streamlined environmental assessments Australia wide - media release 13 July 2009

Bilateral agreements for environmental assessments are now in place between the Commonwealth and all Australian states and territories with Victoria and the ACT both signing agreements in the past month. Victoria and the ACT can now run a single environmental assessment process for projects that require environmental approval at both a federal and a state/territory level.

SNIPPET: Farmers, farmer groups and industry bodies will benefit from $26 million in Rudd Government funding for 56 Landcare projects across Australia - part of a major investment in land management and sustainable agriculture. Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Tony Burke announced the funding while visiting the Little River Landcare site, near Dubbo today. 'The projects funded today will help 30 Landcare groups and 20 other community organisations continue the good work,' Mr Burke said.

NSW will launch solar feed-in tariff for surplus electricity
25/11/2008 - NSW households generating solar power will be paid for surplus electricity they pump into the grid under a new state government scheme.
The Rees government next year will introduce a feed-in tariff to encourage people to take up solar power, paying for unused electricity householders put into the grid.
How much they will receive is yet to be worked out, but it could be up to 60 cents per kilowatt, or four times the price of conventional electricity, ABC Television has reported.
NSW Environment Minister Carmel Tebbutt said the feed-in tariff would act as an incentive for those wanting to help tackle climate change.

Jul 30, 2008 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The Australian Government's planned greenhouse gas emissions trading scheme will also need a financial hub for the carbon permits exchange. Competition has begun for the locating of such an entity between the state governments of New South Wales and Victoria. Experts note that in reality, it is much more likely that a regional emissions trading centre will be established in a location such as Singapore, and that Australia should seek to compete against this. Meanwhile consultation is continuing on the planned roll-out of the carbon credits scheme, with industry lobby groups putting their cases to the Government.
