Obama’s plan: clean energy will help drive a recovery
Even in this era of costly crisis and even more expensive rescue, US$50 billion is still a lot of money. That sum - perhaps even more - is what Congressional leaders and aides to President Barack Obama say he will propose to build new transit lines, weatherise buildings, manufacture clean next-generation vehicles, and create new “green collar” jobs.
Even more crucial than the scale of the spending on clean energy is what the President says it represents to his overall economic development strategy. Clean energy projects are a crucial piece of an estimated US$700 billion to US$1 trillion, two-year stimulus plan to put 3 million people back to work, and the first wave of public investment to transform how America powers itself. Remarkably, it now appears that Obama plans to launch his presidency with a daring idea: To anchor the American economy with energy sources not derived from fossil fuels.

Sustainable business leader outlines strategies
Global appliances manufacturer Electrolux is on track to reduce its overall energy consumption by 15% by the end of this year, saving the company A$67 million a year.
Head of Sustainability Affairs, Henrik Sundstrom, recently outlined the company’s global strategies for reducing the environmental impact of its manufacturing processes and products at Ai Group Sustainable Business Network breakfast briefings in Melbourne on October 16 and in Sydney on October 17.

Qld to introduce a new polluter-pays model for industry
30/10/2008 - The Queensland government will introduce a new polluter-pays model for industry that it says will provide an incentive for businesses to be clean and green.
Premier Anna Bligh on Wednesday announced new annual licensing fees will be charged to businesses according to the risk of pollution to air, land and water from January 1 next year.

$1m grant for wind turbine testing
Federal Environment Minister, Peter Garrett today announced funding of $1.05 million to the Research Institute for Sustainable Energy at Murdoch University to build a national Small Wind Turbine Test Centre.
The Small Wind Turbine Test Centre will be funded under the Australian Government’s Renewable Remote Power Generation Program.
Mr Garrett said that the Small Wind Turbine Test Centre will provide a one-stop-shop for certification, standards and training to develop a stronger small wind turbine industry in Australia.

Energy-saving technologies shunned over long pay-back periods
Corporate policies demanding return on investment periods of no longer than three years are counting against many new energy-efficient systems
Strict corporate policies governing the length of return on investment periods are hampering the adoption of energy-saving and renewable energy technologies, according to a new survey from consultancy EnergyTeam.
The survey of more than 110 UK bosses found that 81 per cent would demand a return on investment on new technologies, regardless of the potential long-term cost and carbon savings.
