9/09/2008 - Professor Ross Garnaut's recommendation for a 10% cut in Australian greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 was put forward with the acknowledgement that it did not go far enough to achieve the kind of cuts necessary to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

However, it was put forward in the context of trying to help international negotiations with the realisation that the world must absolutely avoid exceeding 550 parts per million (ppm) of atmospheric carbon.

CFMEU says ETS is unlikely to impact on coal industry

8/09/2008 - It is unlikely the coal industry will suffer major job losses under an emissions trading scheme, trade unions say.

The federal government's top climate adviser, Professor Ross Garnaut, has proposed a $20 price tag on carbon permits in 2010.

This would add about five cents a litre to petrol and 40 per cent on electricity prices.

National secretary of the Construction Forestry Mining Energy Union (CFMEU), John Sutton, said the scheme would not necessarily impact on jobs.

Costs of mitigation bearable -Garnaut projections show

8/09/2008 - The costs of reducing greenhouse gas emissions don't look so big when seen from up close.

There is a widespread fear that measures to mitigate Australia's contribution to global warming would wreck the economy.

The best guess of the Garnaut Climate Change Review, updated on Friday with the release of a supplementary draft report on targets and trajectories, is that proposed mitigation measures will cause gross national product (GNP) to grow about one tenth of a percentage point slower over the remainder of the century.
